About

I graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in Summer 2009. I received a 2.1 honours degree (BSc) in Computing Science.

The following modules were studied:

2006-2007 (Stage 1)

  • Problem Solving, Program Design and Implementation
  • Object-Oriented Program Design and Development
  • Foundation Mathematics for Computing Science
  • Computer Architecture and Communications
  • The IT Professional in Today's Society
  • Computer Environments

2007-2008 (Stage 2)

  • Advanced Programming
  • Requirements Analysis and Database Design
  • Computer Systems and Networks
  • Modelling and Computation
  • Software Engineering Team Project
  • Algorithm Design and Analysis

2008-2009 (Stage 3)

  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Understanding Programming Languages
  • Project and Dissertation in Computing Science
  • System and Network Security
  • Internet Technology and Electronic Commerce
  • Middleware and Web Services
  • Software Project Management
  • Spanish: Beginners Level

During summer 2008 I took part in the Shell Step scheme, my placement was with the new media company fusebox in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. During the two week placement I worked as a web developer on several different projects.

Dissertation

Dissertation CoverIn my final year my dissertation title was `The Contextual Design of the Student Admissions Process`. This involved using contextual techniques to evaluate and improve the current postgraduate admissions processes. At the end a PHP/MySql incorperating jQuery prototype system was built which received excellent feedback from the staff that evaulated it.

The dissertation itself was selected by the school as one of the best of the 2009 students and is now available to read/loan from the University library.

2009-2010 (MSc)

I am now back at Newcastle studying Bioinformatics and Computational Systems Biology.

  • Bioinformatics Programming in Java
  • Bioinformatics Theory and Practice
  • Computational Analysis of Complex Biological Systems
  • e-Science for Bioinformatics
  • Fundamentals of Cell and Molecular Biology (Lab Work)
  • Gene Expression, Proteomics and Microarray Informatics
  • Numeric Skills for Bioinformatics
  • Research Project
  • Research Skills for Bioinformatics
  • Stochastic Systems Biology
  • Systems Administration for Bioinformatics

Research Project

The research project that I am working on is titled "Semantic Motif Searching in an Ondex Drug Discovery Network". This involves finding potential reuses for existing drugs, for example Zyban is a smoking cessation aid but it also is an affective anti-depressant. This project itself is a extension of previous work carried out by Cockell, S.J. et al. (2010). An integrated dataset for in silico drug discovery. Journal of Integrative Bioinformatics. 7(3):116
